The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is an agency that oversees all licensing and certification of EMTs. The training courses are also governed by the agency that makes sure that the training centers provide the important skills and as well as competency to trainees that will practice as EMTs in the state of Colorado. The EMT training centers must be licensed as providers by the state and are required to withhold all EMT basic standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in theirĀ curriculum’s. The main goal of these curriculums is to provide candidates with the skills and competency to offer care in the following ways:
- Patient assessment in many different trauma conditions.
- Trainees will be able to offer the best emergency care based off of the initial assessments.
- Patient transportation that eliminates the possibility for further trauma or injuries.
- Trainees will be able to perform the job in an efficient and safe manner.
There are certain requirements that candidates must have in order to apply to EMT training courses. In Colorado, applicants must have a current certification for CPR. Applicants will also be asked to provide the following:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Applicants must be 18 years of age. Identification is required.
- It may be required for training in life support depending on the provider.
- Candidates are required to pass criminal background checks.
- Up to date vaccination are also required such as Hep.B, Chicken Pox, MMR, etc.
EMT training in the state of Colorado has a minimum of 110 hours, but most approved courses are going to be closer to 220 hours. In these courses, trainees will cover topics like patient assessment, trauma treatment, and airway management. These are just some of the topics that you can expect to cover.
There are various places that offer state approved EMT training courses such as hospitals and some
community colleges. Some of the best training courses are offered by the Red Rocks community college as well as the Front Range community college. Health One hospitals also have a very qualified training course.
