Similar to many states, Florida also has 3 various levels of EMT certification. These 3 different levels include the following:
- Professional Rescuer Certification
- EMT – Basic
- Paramedic
The requirements for each of these three levels of certification vary. For starters, in order to receive your Professional Rescuer Certification, or to receive EMT certification, you will need to have completed a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).
The first step to becoming an EMT in Florida is to take a training course. The only requirement that you must meet in order to take an EMT training course in Florida is that you must have a high school degree, or an equivalent degree. Once you have taken the course and successfully completed it, you can apply to become an EMT. You will have to pay any required fees when submitting the forms. In order to become an EMT, the following must be met:
- Pass the EMT test
- Attend an HIV/AIDS information course
- Complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) form
- Complete the DH 1583 Form; this can only be done after completing the previous form (NREMT)
- Consent to a background check
For those applicants who have prior advanced training, they must show evidence of this in when submitting their application. Those who may be considered to have advanced training include:
- Those who are certified in another state
- Certified Florida paramedic
- Licensed health professional
The process is fairly similar for those seeking to become a certified paramedic. The forms are generally the same. The only difference is that the fee is waived for those applying for paramedic certification.
It’s important that in the state of Florida, you find a training program that is accredited by the DOH. Florida offers training programs in
60 plus institutions, so finding one in your location should not be an issue. Certain programs may recommend taking further courses at a local community college, but this is not required.
The requirements in Florida are fairly straight forward, and with such a high population, the state has a high demand for EMTs. The process is not as daunting as it may seem, and serving your state as an EMT is a job that is both personally rewarding, as well as financially rewarding.
