As with many different states across the nation, Minnesota uses the NREMT or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to determine the standards for EMT certifications. The NREMT is an exam that is taken upon successful completion of an EMT training course that must be state approved. All certifications and licensing are approved only through the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Board.
There are many different facilities that EMT candidates can enroll for the state approved training courses. In Minnesota, the American Red Cross offers training course for not only new trainees, but for EMT’s that are in need of a refresher course. EMT training courses are also offered by several community colleges and vocational schools.
The EMT training course all should meet or exceed the state standards that have been set by the NREMT or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Trainees that are applying for courses offered by the Red Cross must meet certain guidelines such as:
- You must be 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Trainees may not have a criminal history, criminal back ground checks are required.
- Current CPR certification must be obtained or approved through the Red Cross in Minnesota.
The EMT training courses are approximately 168 hours, with both didactic and clinical work. Trainees will cover several topics during this training course; here are a few of the most common:
- Patient assessment
- Cardiac monitoring
- Transporting and immobilization
- Airway Management
These are only sample topics that will be discussed. More topics such as hazardous materials, Pharmacology and blood borne pathogens are also likely to be discussed. The fees that will cover the entire EMT training course are roughly $1200.
After completing the required EMT training course, candidates will need to proceed with the
NREMT exam. Once you have passed the exam and received your certification, then you are now licensed to work in the state of Minnesota as an EMT.
